#3749084
General Motors Part Number 3749084 Rod Retainer
General Motors part # 3749084 is sometimes
referred to as a clip and sometimes a retainer in
the various parts catalogs.
I've always called it a "G" clip. This part is used
for rod retention whether the rod is a part of your
clutch linkage, shifter linkage or back drive linkage.
Although it can generally be replaced by a cotter
pin and washer, when in good condition and
installed properly it does a nice job of retaining
the rod, while allowing some wiggle room and
suppressing rattles.
The "084" clip was a modern version of the
spring, washer and cotter pin used on earlier models.
This part is made from one piece of spring steel
rod and is easier to install (especially on an assembly line).

Disclaimer:
Factory correct applications are your responsibility. GM made part and part # changes with no rhyme but a reason (no production interruptions at any cost).
Application charts are for replacement parts that were available at the time of parts book printing, and when possible model specific assembly manuals.
My observations come from the parts I have in my collection or other reliable sources your parts may differ.
If Factory correctness is your goal, do more research, join car clubs,
forums and buy an assembly manual if one is available for your Project Car (you wont be sorry).
This is a fun and interesting part of the hobby!
