78-81 A Pedal Assembly
1978 to 1988 A & G BODY PEDAL ASSEMBLY
Most of my General Motors replacement parts
books are of 1981 vintage or older except one
1982-87 Pontiac catalog. I don't have proof that
manual transmissions were offered after the 1981
model year. The Pontiac catalog doesn't mention
any manual parts, but it uses the same pedal bracket
thru the 1987 model year and I have personally
seen G bodies with at least a 1985 vintage that
have the frame bracket holes drilled. These two
facts are just a couple that make converting up to
1987 (1988 on some models) a nearly bolt on job.
Under each part description will be a application
for that part that includes the years and other per-
tenant information. This does not mean it will not
work on all "G" bodies, it just means that is as far a
I can verify.

4.634 BRACKET, Brake and Clutch Pedal
Prior to 1980 General Motors had a separate part
number for non-power brake cars. The 1982-87
Pontiac Parts catalog used this number for all
"G" bodies. This mounts on the (4) brake booster
bolts and has a sheet metal screw going thru the
large hole (far right in picture) into the dash
frame.

0.830 PEDAL ASSEMBLY, Clutch
This is a "bolt" style pedal that uses a spacer and
two bushings. Most used pedals have the upper
push rod hole "egged out".

1256195
4.625 PEDAL ASSEMBLY, Brake (M.T., P.B.)
Manual brake pedal part # 1256194 has the same size
(small) padas the clutch pedal. I have seen pedals
with the brake rod attachment pin in the upper
(Manual Brakes), lower (Power Brakes) and both
holes. This pedal is identical to part # 1256193
automatic transmission pedal except for the pad size.

1256202
4.630 COVER, Pedal Pad (Brake and Clutch)
This pad cover is used on both the clutch and
brake pedals.

BRAKE and CLUTCH PEDAL PIVOT
The 1978-87 A & G body cars and trucks used a
bolt style pedal attachment. Some aftermarket
pedal manufacturers skip this fact and make an
inferior product that will cause problems.
8.900 BOLT (7/16"-14 x 4 1/2")
When converting your car or truck from an auto-
matic to a manual transmission you will need a
longer bolt. The one pedal (automatic) bolt is
3 1/2" long. I have seen this bolt installed from
the drivers side or the passenger side. It is nearly
impossible to install from the drivers side with
the hanger bracket installed.

4.626 SPACER, Clutch and Brake Pedal
steel tubing 7/16" I.D. X 2 3/4" long
(cut to length as required)
The parts catalogs have the notation to cut to size
and the inside diameter. The outside diameter and
length critical dimensions for proper operation
of the pedals. One is needed for each pedal. The
original brake pedal spacer can be reused.

0.831 BUSHING, Pedal Shaft (Nylon)
These are the grey bushings. The earlier style
white ones part # 3798256 are found on some
used pedal assemblies and are virtually the same.
Four are required, two for clutch pedal and two
for the brake. Originals from the brake pedal can
be reused but it is advised to put all new bushing
in.

8.929 WASHER,Flat (15/32" ID x 7/8" OD)
This washer is used on the drivers side end of the
assembly bolt to capture the clutch pedal bushings.
78-81 A
8.900 NUT (7/16-14 Lock)
There are a couple of different lock nuts used.
You can reuse your original from the automatic
pedal or use a nylon lock nut. Just use a lock nut.
This should be tightened till the spacers are tight.

0.829 BRACKET, Pedal Bumper
If you are converting from an auto and using
mechanical linkage you will need to add a clutch
pedal stop. They make an aftermarket stop that
will work, but if your pedal assembly comes with
this bracket consider it a big bonus.
78-81 A
8.900 BOLT (5/16"-18 x 5/8")
This is the original style bolt for attaching the
pedal stop bumper bracket. Two (2) are required.
78-81 A
8.900 NUT Hex (5/16"-18)
This nut is used with the above bolt to hold the
clutch pedal bumper bracket on the pedal hanger.
78-81 A
467439
0.829 BUMPER, Pedal
This bumper goes in the slot of the clutch pedal
stop bracket. It is approximately 7/8" x 5/8" and
1/4" thick (measurements are from a used bumper).
78-81 A
463496
4.054 SWITCH, Clutch Neutralizer
This safety switch makes you push the clutch in
to start the car. Of course if the the clutch isn't
adjusted correctly (not releasing) this switch
has no way of telling.
78-81 A
1251368
2.447 CLIP, Stop Light Switch
This clip snaps in the lower hole of the
pedal hanger and retains the stop light
switch.
1362835
2.447 SWITCH ASM., Brake Light
This switch screws into the above clip
that is in the lower hole of the pedal
hanger tongue.

Disclaimer:
Factory correct applications are your responsibility. GM made part and part # changes with no rhyme but a reason (no production interruptions at any cost).
Application charts are for replacement parts that were available at the time of parts book printing.
My observations come from the parts I have in my collection or other reliable sources your parts may differ.
If Factory correctness is your goal, do more research, join car clubs,
forums and buy an assembly manual if one is available for your Project Car (you wont be sorry).
This is a fun and interesting part of the hobby!
